After a long summer off, Olan G. Ruble Arena will soon be back to hosting sporting events as the Iowa Wesleyan volleyball season approaches. This summer The Mt. Pleasant News is taking a look at the upcoming schedules of some area teams, so today we’ll take a detailed look at the Tiger volleyball season and what to look forward to in 2018.

Much like the IW soccer teams, the volleyball team has a back-ended home schedule in 2018. The Tigers will play 10 home games this season, six of which will take place in October, the last month of the season.

IW opens the season with four games in Jacksonville, Ill. The Tigers will take on Grinnell College and Illinois College on the night of Aug. 31, and play two more games the next day, on Sept. 1.

The Tigers will travel to Pella on Sept. 4 to play Central College in their final road game before the home opener. The home opener will be a triangular that will double as IW’s conference opener. They will host Principia College and Fontbonne University on Sept. 8.

Principia and Fontbonne were fourth and fifth respectively in the 2018 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings. The Panthers went 14-4 in the conference and the Griffins were 7-11.

IW went 2-16 last year, which tied them for ninth place with MacMurray. The conference was dominated by the top four teams (Westminster 16-2, Greenville 15-3, Webster 15-3 and Principia 14-4).

The defending conference tournament champion is Greenville, who came into the tournament as the second seend and knocked off third-seeded Webster and top-seeded Westminster to take the title.

IW will play Greenville on the road on Oct. 3. The Tigers will not play the Panthers at home this season.

The Tigers’ two conference wins last year came over MacMurray. IW will host the Highlanders as part of a three-game homestand on Oct. 11.

The season will end with back-to-back conference home games. The Tigers will host Fontbonne on Oct. 24 and take on Spalding on the 27th.

For the first time ever, IW will be eligible for the SLIAC tournament if they finish top four in the league. IW is now a full-time member of the NCAA Division III, officially being welcomed this summer.

Listed below is the full IW volleyball schedule. Conference games will be marked with an asterisk and home games will be in bold.
