Nothing says fall like a little action on the gridiron. The high school football season begins in just over a week, and the college football season will be starting up on Sept. 5.

Today we look at Henry County’s college team, Iowa Wesleyan. The Tigers will be spending four Saturdays at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex this season and six of them on the road.

Before looking ahead to the 2017 schedule, let’s look back to a 2016 season that saw over half of the Tigers’ games get decided by single digits.

The 2016 IW football team had a rough start to the season with two-straight double-digit losses at home. The Tigers lost their only non-conference game, 51-21 against Cornell College, and dropped their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener to Westminster College, 24-7.

The next three games were all barn-burners. The Tigers picked up their first win in a week-three shootout at Greenville College, winning 40-37. They dropped a nail-biter on the road to the University of Minnesota-Morris, 28-27, and lost their homcoming game 25-18 to the University of Northwestern on a touchdown run with just 3:26 remaining in the game.

The Tigers eventually ran their losing streak to five with a 29-15 road loss to Eureka College and a 37-21 loss at home to MacMurray College. Howevever, IW closed out the season with two straight wins; a 38-0 blowout of Martin Luther College on senior night and a thrilling 19-13 comeback win over Crown College on the road.

The Tigers finished the 2016 season 3-7 overall and 3-6 in conference play, putting them in seventh place out of 10 UMAC teams. The University of Northwestern went 8-1 in conference play to take the UMAC title.

IW will begin the 2017 season with a road night game at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon on Sept. 2. They’ll start the conference season off against two of their 2016 wins; Crown College at home on Sept. 9, and at Martin Luther College on Sept. 16.

The Tigers play MacMurray College on the road Sept. 23, and then it’s football under the lights at Mapleleaf on Sept. 30, when IW welcomes Eureka College. This looks to be the last conference game between the Tigers and Red Devils in quite some time, as Eureka will leave the UMAC after the 2017 season.

The Tigers will play the three Minnesota teams in three straight weeks. IW will play College of Saint Scholastica and The University of Northwestern on the road in early October. On Oct. 21, the Tigers return home for a homecoming showdown with The University of Minnesota-Morris.

IW will play Greenville College in their final home game on Oct. 28, and end the season against Westminster College in Fulton, MO., on Nov. 4.

Mapleleaf has the potential to see some tight contests in 2017. Four of the five closest games from last year (Crown, Eureka, Minnesota-Morris, Greenville) will be played in Mt. Pleasant.
