We’re just over three weeks away from the start of fall soccer season and the Iowa Wesleyan teams will soon be getting prepared for two months of games at East Lake Park in Mt. Pleasant.

Today we look ahead towards the IW soccer schedule and see what the Tigers have in store for them in 2017. First, a quick look back to the 2016 season, starting with the men’s team.

Coach Tony Odorisio’s first year with the squad saw a 5-14-1 record overall. The Tigers won their season opener against Crown College and went 2-8-1 September with a draw at Rockford College and a 2-1 win over Grace University at the end of the month.

The Tigers continued to improve in October, going 3-6 with a 1-0 non-conference win over Robert Morris University-Springfield and two conference victories, 2-1 over Eureka College and 4-1 over MacMurray College.

The IW men finished the SLIAC 2-7, which put the Tigers in a tie for eighth with Principia College out of 10 teams. Spalding University went 9-0 in SLIAC play to take the conference title.

Four of the Tigers’ five wins in 2016 were at home. IW went 4-7 at East Lake and picked up wins in three of their last four home games.

The Tiger women struggled to find their offence in 2016, going 0-16-1 overall and 0-8-1 in conference play with their only draw coming in a 1-1 deadlock against Eureka in mid-October. The Tigers and Red Devils tied for ninth in the conference. Webster went 9-0 to take the SLIAC title.

The IW women will have the advantage of playing their first four games at home this season, beginning with a Saturday, Sept. 2 showdown against Rockford College at 2 p.m.

The Tigers will play all seven of their non-conference games by Sept. 22. The conference schedule will begin on Sept. 30 and carry through until Oct. 28. They will play four of their nine SLIAC games at home.

The IW men begin their season on the road in Storm Lake when they take on Buena Vista University on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 3 p.m. Their first four games are on the road.

The season opener for the men will begin on Sept. 10 against Grinnell. SLIAC games will start up on Sept. 30 and run until Oct. 28, with just one non-conference game taking place in that time period.
