Believe it or not, fall sports season is less than one month away. The season starts in mid-August when the high school football season kicks off, so over the next few weeks, The News will take a close look at the schedules for some of the county’s fall sports teams. Today, we take a look at Iowa Wesleyan soccer, starting with the men.

The Tiger men went 10-7-2 overall last season, which doubled their win total from the previous season. The 2017 team won as many games as the previous four IW men’s soccer teams.

In the conference, IW went 6-2-1, which put them in third-place overall. The Tigers finished behind first-place Fontbonne (8-1) and second-place Webster (7-0-2).

If IW was a full NCAA Division III member, they would have advanced to the SLIAC conference tournament, which takes the top four teams each year. Since the Tigers were not a full member, fifth-place Westminster (5-3-1) went on along with Fontbonne, Webster, and Principia, who finished fourth with a 5-2-2 record.

This made a huge difference in the conference championship race. Westminster won the tournament as the fourth seed, knocking off top-seeded Fontbonne in the semifinals and third-seeded Principia in the championship.

This year, the Tigers are eligible. IW was announced as a full-time NCAA member this summer, which makes all athletic teams eligible for conference tournaments as well as postseason tournaments.

This year’s IW home games are probably going to be a little chilly. IW will have seven home games this season and five of them will take place in October.

Their first game overall will be at Central College on Sept. 1. They’ll travel to Mt. Mercy on Sept. 3 and Hannibal-LaGrange University on Sept. 5, before coming back to Mt. Pleasant for their home opener on Sept. 9 against Coe College.

Their only other home non-conference game will be at Monmouth College on Sept. 22. Just two of the Tigers’ 12 September games will be played at East Lake Park.

The Tigers do host five of their nine conference games. IW will start out at Greenville on Sept. 29 before hosting Eureka and MacMurray in early October.

IW was the only conference team to defeat Principia in the 2017 regular season, drubbing them 6-0. That sets up a contentious home game with the Panthers on Oct. 13. That game will take place four days after their road contest with defending conference tournament champion Westminster.

The 2017 regular season will wrap up at Spalding University on Oct. 27. The final home game is an Oct. 23 matchup with Webster. The Tigers, however, hope to be playing into November when the conference tournament is scheduled to take place.
