Brace yourself sports fans because this is the last Friday without football in Henry County until at least late October.

WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union each play their home openers next week, and both Mt. Pleasant and New London will take the field on Friday, Aug. 25.

Today we look ahead at the schedules of the three small school teams in the area. First let’s take a quick peek back to the year that was in 2016.

The year 2016 was a year of change in Henry County football. Winfield-Mt. Union was gutted by graduation after making the playoffs the previous year, New London’s core was entering their sophomore year and ready to compete for a postseason spot and WACO was in their first year of eight-man football.

It was the Tigers who stole the show early in 2016. After dropping their first game to Wapello, New London thrust itself into the playoff race with five-straight wins overall including four straight in the district.

In their final road game of the season, New London took on Lynville-Sully in what looked like a game to decide the No. 1 seed in the district. The Tigers dropped a heartbreaker, 17-14, and couldn’t rebound the next week with a 23-14 upset loss against Pekin. New London finished the year with a win over W-MU to move to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in district play, but the Tigers couldn’t quite slip into the playoffs.

W-MU struggled to score in 2016. The Wolves did hit double digits against Cardinal in week three, but ended up falling 19-18. That would be the closest game all year for the Wolves.

W-MU did end up with one win on the season, via forfeit. Danville cancelled their season just days before their scheduled showdown with the Wolves, which was set to be the 2016 homecoming game. The Wolves finished the year 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the district.

The first eight-man schedule at WACO was filled with high scoring contests. The Warriors scored 20-plus points seven times in 2016 and gave up 20-plus points seven times as well.

After dropping their first two non-conference games, the Warriors won their first eight-man game with a 74-12 blowout of Tri-County in week three. WACO lost to Wyoming Midland in week four but picked up two straight wins over Springville and English Valleys to move to 3-3.

The Warriors had a rough end of the year, dropping three straight to close out the season. The Warriors went 3-6 overall and finished in a tie for fourth in the district with a 2-4 record.

WACO will start their season at home next Thursday, Aug. 17, when they host H-L-V Victor. Winfield-Mt. Union will head to Columbus on Friday, Aug. 18 for one of three non-conference games and New London will take the field at Wapello on Friday, Sept. 25.

Note that W-MU and New London are both short one district game this season due to the retraction of Danville from the schedule. While W-MU will still play nine games (one extra preseason game), New London still shows just eight games on its schedule. WACO, being an eight-man team, shows 10 games.
