Nov 26, 2012

WEST LIBERTY — The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team faded after a big first quarter, falling to West Liberty in its first loss of the season, 52-41, on Saturday.

The Wolves scored 21 points in the first eight minutes of the game but managed only 20 points from there on out.

West Liberty, meanwhile, put up a 19-point first quarter and — after a rough second quarter — scored 14 in the third and 16 in the fourth to overpower W-MU in the final minutes of the game for the win.

Cassie Kingery led the Wolves with 14 points and Emily Mathews scored 10. Alicia Escher added eight, Shelby Therme contributed seven and Paige Breon scored two.

Escher had a team-high eight rebounds.

Therme dished five assists and Kingery had three steals.

The Wolves are now 2-1 overall and remain 2-0 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division.

They will play Tuesday in a girls/boys doubleheader against Louisa-Muscatine. The girls start at 6 p.m. and the boys follow.
