Allen Cobb Show at ICON Gallery

Aug 07, 2017
Visitors at the Allen Cobb show at the ICON Gallery in Fairfield enjoy art through different mediums. The show runs through Sept. 23.

ICON Gallery presents “Prototypes: Creative Work” by Allen Cobb through Sept. 23.

The exhibition includes images, installations, slides and videos. The realms for exploring creative thinking are endless for Cobb. His activity flows between visual art (both hands on and computer created), sound and music explorations, and fiction and non-fiction writing.

“Allen is a unique creator,” says ICON Director Bill Teeple. “I say ‘creator’ because ‘artist’ doesn’t adequately covey the full extent of Allen’s creative activities. He is equally artist, scientist, fabricator, designer, philosopher and humorist.”

As Cobb puts it, “Everyone creates, and all creativity comes from the same silent source. Art is the intentional application of creative acts for two purposes: to further the discovery of deeper self-knowledge, and to offer the byproduct of that process to others. An artwork is, in essence, a side-effect of one person’s chosen activity for discovery.”

Each of the pieces shown here is a prototype for something greater or more polished yet to come. This show is a menagerie of ideas that have emerged far enough to prove themselves interesting. Collectively, they afford a glimpse into one person’s approach and sensibilities, a blueprint for future creations, and perhaps insights or directions of some interest to others.

ICON Gallery is located at 58 North Main Street, on the west side of Fairfield Square. Hours are Tuesday through Friday noon to 5 p.m., Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. or by appointment. For information call 641-469-6252 or email Visit the ICON website at
