Bible reading marathon begins next week

Jun 21, 2017

All counties in southeast Iowa are taking part in the 2017 Iowa 99 County Bible Reading Marathon, inviting people to read 30-minute or more segments of the Bible out loud beginning June 25 and continuing to July 4, our nation’s birthday! Volunteer readers of all ages are invited to participate: adults, children, senior citizens, students; all denominations, business people, civic leaders, everyone!

2016 was the first year that the Bible was read aloud in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties! Thousands of people of all ages and every walk of life participated in these readings, which took place primarily at county courthouses. We experienced many special moments as families, neighborhoods, and churches of a variety of denominations came together to experience the reading of God’s Word.

This year, in order to include even more people, state leaders have encouraged “Taking It to the Cities,” and many counties have expanded opportunities to read the Word of God, from Genesis to Revelation, in a variety of locations within their county. The reading schedule is unique to each county, some reading at their county courthouses, others in their town square or city parks, still others in local businesses or coffeeshops.

Governor Kim Reynolds has chosen to continue former Governor Terry Branstad’s support of this effort by, once again, signing a “Proclamation” for 2017. This Proclamation recognizes the history of biblical principles and the importance of its influence on many of our great national leaders in the development of our nation; and encourages Iowans to join in the 2017 Iowa 99 County Bible Reading Marathon, and to continue reading the Bible in their homes.

In Psalm 119:105, the psalmist David was inspired to write “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” It’s our goal to share this light of hope throughout our state; and let it shine from Iowa, situated in the heart of our nation, into all of America.
