CEDAR FALLS — Elizabeth Birchfield, a sophomore at WACO High School, competed in the 141st Iowa State trap shoot in Cedar Rapids this weekend.

She shot her personal best in singles, and qualified for the 118th Grand American World Trap Shooting Championships in Sparta, Ill.

Birchfield went 199-200 in clay targets from the 16-yard line, missing just one shot on her second of two flights. That earned her the title of ATA Lady 1, which qualified her for the championships, where she will represent the state of Iowa.

Birchfield started shooting trap in 2013 with the Warrior trapshooting team in the Scholastic Clay Target Program, and shoots on the weekends at registered ATA shoots as often as she can. Her shotgun of choice is a Browning BT-99.

The Grand American World Trap Shooting Championships will take place from Aug 2-12.
