Blood Center asks public to ‘roll up their sleeves’ to support blood supply in late summer

Aug 03, 2017

Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center (MVRBC) is asking blood donors to step forward and give blood this week as the Blood Center faces its lowest week of summer for bookings at mobile blood drives. MVRBC, exclusive provider of blood and blood components to hospitals in Burlington, Ft. Madison, Keokuk, Ottumwa, Mt. Pleasant and throughout southeast Iowa, is seeing the impact of busy summer schedules and its inability to schedule mobile blood drives at schools during the summer months. To schedule an appointment to give blood at an MVRBC Donor Center or mobile blood drive, call (800) 747-5401, use the new mobile app (more info, below) or find blood drive information online at www.bloodcenterimpact.org.

To thank those who support the blood supply this time of year, MVRBC has developed a “Save Our Summer” campaign featuring a number of special incentives, detailed below. This includes a monthly drawing for a vacation travel package and vouchers for $10 gift cards being distributed at MVRBC Donor Centers and on select dates at mobile blood drives. (Learn more about MVRBC’s summer donor promotions at www.bloodcenter.org/summer.)

Blood components are in constant use year-round, but the rate of blood donation decreases during the summer months. Summer break means the Blood Center’s schedule of high school and college blood is greatly reduced and, in the final weeks before the start of the new school year, regular donors may take vacation or help organize or attend their local fair in early to mid-August. All of these factors, coupled with a recent increase in blood utilization due to trauma, makes this a critical time of year.

“At this point in the summer, it’s ‘all hands on deck’ to support the blood supply,’ says Amanda Hess, Director, Donor Relations. “Patient needs at our local hospitals remain constant throughout the summer, so we’re doing all we can to recruit additional donors and make sure the blood supply remains strong.”

“SAVE OUR SUMMER” DONOR PROMOTIONS

• Through Sept. 10, ALL DONORS (CENTERS AND MOBILES): all donors automatically registered in a monthly drawing for a travel-themed prize basket, including a $2500 gift card to fund a trip to the destination of the winner’s choice (details at www.bloodcenter.org/win).

• Through August 20, DONOR CENTERS: Vouchers for $10 gift cards at Donor Centers. Vouchers are redeemable for donor’s choice of $10 gift cards from Amazon (eGift Card), Starbucks, Steak & Shake, Subway, Target, Darden Restaurants (Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Longhorn Steakhouse, Seasons52, and Bahama Breeze), Home Depot, iTunes (eGift Card), Panera or Buffalo Wild Wings.

• Through August 13, MOBILE BLOOD DRIVES: Vouchers for $10 gift cards (same options as above).

• August 28 — September 10, ALL DONORS: 2X Points for IMPACT Donor Loyalty Store.

Donations of all blood types are needed, but there is a special need for type O-negative and O-positive whole blood donors, type AB plasma donors and platelet donors. Type O red blood cells and AB plasma are “universal” blood components, so named because these components can be transfused to patients of all other blood types and are frequently used in emergency settings.

BLOOD CENTER LOOKS FOR NEW MOBILE APP TO MAKE AN IMPACT

MVRBC is now offering a mobile application for Apple iOS and Android users. The “Blood Center IMPACT” app was developed as part of a recent donor scheduling and communication software upgrade. Users can download the app from either the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (Google) and use it to find nearby Donor Centers and mobile blood drives, schedule appointments for donation, and track their own donation history and wellness information.
