WASHINGTON — While allowing Lexington Boulevard to keep its name, the Washington City Council approved Tuesday an ordinance to give the road leading to the All-Veteran’s Memorial an honorary name to honor those who served. With little discussion the council approved naming the road “Veterans Memorial Boulevard.” The request to rename the street had been made at a previous meeting by area veterans. During discussion the council learned the name of the road and addresses of the buildings would not be changed and the only real difference will be signage to recognize the unofficial name of the road.

“We have a very nice veterans memorial that sits a little ways off the highway,” veteran Lonny Milligan told the council during the previous meeting. “Unless you live in Washington you don’t know that it is there. We don’t want to change the name or take Lexington off there. We just want to have it honorary named as they have done in Iowa City with Hayden Frye.”

Milligan said that American Legion Post 29 is not sponsoring the request, but is supportive of it. Several members of the Legion were present at the meeting to support the proposal. He said there would probably be only one sign, which would be at the corner of Lexington and Highway 92.

Before the council voting on the issue, the veterans had to get approval for the name change from the Iowa Department of Transportation. One of the points of discussion was the name for the roadway. The council had to amend the resolution because one of the earlier proposed names was on it.

Council member Kerry Janecek made the motion to adopt the resolution and council member Kathy Salazar seconded it. The vote was unanimous.

The council also approved the second reading of an ordinance to change a yield sign at East Tyler and South Ninth to a Stop sign.
