Trevor Lynn of Brighton has announced his candidacy for Iowa House District 84, running as a Republican.

The seat is currently occupied by Republican Dave Heaton of Mt. Pleasant, but Heaton announced earlier this year that he will not seek re-election. The district includes all of Henry County, the northern part of Lee County, the southern part of Washington County and Jefferson County east of Fairfield.

Lynn graduated from WACO high school in 2015 and has lived in District 84 his entire life. He is a junior at Iowa State University, where he is majoring in political science with a minor in history. He also works as a secretary in the Iowa Sentate.

He became a page in the Iowa House of Representatives in 2015, and this led him to join the Washington County Central Republican Committee later that year. He has been the secretary of that committee since 2017. He was appointed to serve on the Juvenile Justice Advisory Council.

Lynn said in a news release that his sister is a type 1 diabetic and suffered from chronic seizures as a toddler.

“Without medical insurance coverage, her monthly prescriptions would cost over $800,” stated the release. “Although he is young, Lynn understands some tough calls families and individuals have to make. Preserving Hawk-i and Medicaid insurance coverage for children, seniors and the disabled are a major concern for Lynn.”

Among Lynn’s priorities are juvenile justice, increasing funds for rural schools, renewable energy, mental health care reform and agricultural policies that benefit both small and large farming operations.

Lynn’s father, David Lynn, owns a painting business he started in 1998, and Lynn has worked summers helping his dad paint. Lynn’s own work experience includes Pizza Ranch in high school and Best Buy during college. He has volunteered with his local Lions Club on service projects.
