Business with Iowa ties in Corridor to be purchased by Apple

The tech company plans to acquire Texture, a digital magazine service

Apple’s recently announced plans to purchase a digital magazine subscription service will give the technology giant some roots in the Corridor.

Earlier this month, Apple said it has reached an agreement to acquire Texture, an app that gives users unlimited access to digital magazines for a monthly fee, from Next Level Media. Apple did not disclose the dollar amount of the acquisition.

In 2015, Next Level Media opened a quality assurance office in Coralville for Texture.

The office now has 18 employees, Iowa City Area Development Group said Tuesday. The acquisition has ICAD eyeing the potential for Apple to put more employees there.

The economic development group “is hopeful that this acquisition will help increase that number and allow our region to develop a stronger relationship with Apple for future opportunities,” ICAD said in a news release.

Spokespeople for Apple and Texture did not immediately respond to emails asking how the acquisition would affect the Coralville office.

In addition to the Coralville office, Texture has ties to Des Moines-based magazine publisher Meredith Corp. Before the Apple deal, Meredith co-owned Texture with publishers Condé Nast, Hearst, Rogers Media and investment firm KKR.
