Celebrate Earth Day with Jay N. ‘Ding’ Darling

HC Conservation Department hosts presentation about life of important conservationist
Apr 09, 2018

The Henry County Conservation Department and Oakland Mills Nature Center invite the community to celebrate Earth Day with them on Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m.

Actor Tom Milligan will present “The Art of Conservation: A Visit with Ding Darling.” During the 45 minute presentation, “Jay N. ‘Ding’ Darling” visits with the audience like he is an old friend back in his office at The Des Moines Register.

In his early career in Sioux City, Darling was made aware of the natural world around him while developing skills as an editorial cartoonist. He recalls his remarkable life journey, considered by many to be one of the most important members of the modern conservation movement in the first half of the 20th century.

The impact of Darling’s work still is felt today. This program is part of the Democracy and Informed Citizen Initiative, administered by the Federation of State Humanities Councils, thanks to The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Preregistration is appreciated, but not necessary. This is a free program and open to all ages.

For more information or to preregister, go to, Events, and choose Henry County. The event will be held in the EE classroom of the Oakland Mills Nature Center.
