Chapter NZ of the P.E.O. planning ‘Pies in the Park’ for June, July

Chapter NZ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood met for their regular meeting on Monday, May 21, at 1 p.m.

Before the business meeting, members met at the Harlan-Lincoln House where Director of the Museum Anna Villareal shared about the famous family who once lived there. President Lana Moeller convened the business meeting in the memory rooms of Old Main on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan University (IW) with 23 members present.

Chaplain Lea McCormick shared scripture. Recording secretary Jan Lange read the minutes from the previous meeting and treasurer Deb Mascarenas gave the financial report. Correspondence was read by Mary Beth Young, which included several thank you notes.

“The Sisterhood” membership committee co-chairman Betty Lowe reminded members of the open house planned for Vicky Bergstrom’s birthday on May 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sunnybrook Assisted Living. Ways & Means chairman Kathy Schimmelpfennig reported having foods for sale and B&B chairman Joyce Dennison reported about lunches served and upcoming dates.

Memory Rooms chairman Elizabeth Garrels shared that the first sessions of tour training is now complete and that these training sessions will be repeated in the fall. Training for giving town tours will be held twice this summer. Garrels also announced that the Heritage Tour for presidents and organizers across the U.S. and Canada will be July 19 on IW’s campus.

Karen Brimhall shared that the next fundraiser for the Henry County sesquicentennial committee will be “Pies in the Park.” The four Henry County chapters will be serving pie and a scoop of ice cream for a free-will offering in conjunction with the Mt. Pleasant Community Band concerts.

The concerts are June 21, June 28 and July 12 in Central Park with serving to begin at 6:45 p.m. Homeade cherry, apple, peach and rhubarb pies will be offered. Ice water will be available. Everyone and their leashed dog, who will receive a milk bone dog biscuit, is welcome.

At the close of the meeting, refreshments of cookies and lemonade were served by co-hostesses Jo Sankey Connie Geiser, Mary Shy, Lea McCormick and Joy Conwell.

The next meeting is Monday, June 11 at Ashford Park Clubhouse for a summer luncheon at noon. The business meeting will follow. Co-hostesses for the meal will be Jan Lange, Amy Pullis, Madison Pullis, Kris Emerson, Carol Lauger, Vicky Bergstrom, Ouida Naylor and Mary Rockford. Members should contact Vice President Connie Geiser about attending and bringing a salad or dessert.
