City planning improvement projects for summer fun

More improvements are coming to Mt. Pleasant. As residents long for summer months, improvements to the aquatic center, the tennis courts at East Lake Park, new housing renovations and various other construction projects are being planned.

During the Mt. Pleasant City Council meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 14, the council voted to sign an engineering services agreement with Waters Edge Aquatic Design firm to make improvements to the aquatic center. This includes new slides, an updated filter system and chemical disinfection system. The cost of the agreement is $38,320. Waters Edge Aquatic Design is the firm that originally designed the pool.

The council also approved a motion to hire Tennis Services of Iowa to sand, crack fill and resurface the four tennis courts at East Lake Park. The contract is for $26,700. The tennis courts have not been redone since 2007.

In addition to recreation improvement projects, Southeast Iowa Housing Inc. is applying on behalf of the city of Mt. Pleasant for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), which would fund seven additional apartments in the building at 103 to 105 N. Jefferson St. If the city receives the grant, Southeast Iowa Housing would own and rent the units. They could sell the building after five years if they wish per grant requirements.

Mayor Steve Brimhall said that he feels that it’s a good opportunity to get more housing to Mt. Pleasant. An addition of seven units would bring apartment housing up to almost 70 units downtown.

Bringing new jobs to Mt. Pleasant, Beck’s Seed is purchasing six feet of N. Harvey Dr. from the city for $320. The sale of the city right of way allows for Beck’s to expand the footprint of an addition to their campus, which would meet the city’s set back requirements.

Other sales of city property include the city alley right of way in the 500 block of N. Cherry, which runs north and south of Jones St. between two properties. The current adjoining neighbors would like to purchase the 16 feet of vacated land. The cost per eight feet parcel is $320. The sale will be March 14.

In other news, the council had their first reading of a proposed amendment for no parking on the east side of S. Marion from Washington St. to Clay St. This block is the only block on Marion that allows parking on both sides of the street. The council is concerned that parking on both sides is a safety hazard and blocks the flow of traffic.

The next Mt. Pleasant City Council meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 28.
