Construction for jail project to get underway soon

Dec 22, 2017

The land for the jail project has officially been signed over to the county, a present received just in time for Christmas, and plans for construction are well underway.

During the Henry County Board of Supervisors meeting on Thursday, Dec. 21, John Hansen, president of Midwest Construction Consultants, presented an update on the jail project. Hansen joked with supervisors that the transfer of land was “like Santa Claus coming,” before he reviewed pay requests for the month of December.

Hansen said Midwest Construction would prefer putting up a metal building for additional storage on site rather than renting a job trailer. Hansen said a trailer would cost $3,000 to $4,000 to bring onto the site and then an additional $3,000 to $4,000 to remove. Rental would cost about $500 to $600 a month.

Alternatively, a metal building would be something permanent. Sheriff Rich McNamee said from his vantage point, half of the cost of the building is already covered by the funds they would need to spend on a rented trailer anyway. “It’s half paid for already,” he said.

McNamee said that the building would be used as a construction office and additional storage during construction. The building will be 40 by 64 square feet and will cost just over $60,000.

On Thursday, Hansen also met with engineers to discuss the jail’s floor plan and make modifications if necessary.

During the meeting, supervisor Greg Moeller asked whether the county needs to create a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Corrections for maintenance on the jail project property such as lawn care and snow removal.

Hansen said it isn’t urgent and that they can let everyone get through the New Year before beginning that discussion.
