Construction to begin on Mapleleaf parking lot

May 10, 2018

Marching orders have been given and construction on Mapleleaf Athletic Complex will begin Monday, May 14.

During the Mt. Pleasant City Council meeting Wednesday, May 9, Mayor Steve Brimhall said that work will move quickly, and the contractor is eager and ready to go.

“Everybody’s cooperating,” Brimhall said.

The improvements to Mapleleaf’s parking lot commence in the midst of other summer construction projects, including the Iris Street Recreational trail project.

This project consists of constructing a 10-foot concrete recreational trail from the end of the existing trail at the Sunnybrook Assisted living facility going north on Linden Dr. to Iris, then north on Iris to Washington St. The city has received an IDOT grant of $250,000.

The contract for the project has been awarded to the low bidder Hickey Construction from Keokuk.

As the Jay Street reconstruction project continues, the council approved a change order increase of $2,258 for the installation of an additional 84 inches of manhole barrel.

In other news, the council approved the City of Mt. Pleasant’s support for Main Street Mt. Pleasant with financial contribution and the appointment of Brimhall and City Administrator Brent Schleisman to their board. This support is required for Main Street Mt. Pleasant to be certified.

The council also approved hiring a new Waste Water Treatment Plant laborer. There were roughly 15 applicants, five of which the city approved, finding Thomas Wesley as the best fit for the job. He will begin May 14.

Finally, the council approved putting Aaron Dorothy on the Firefighter Reserve Unit. Dorothy was recommended by Mt. Pleasant Fire Chief Stewart Kinney.

The next Mt. Pleasant City Council meeting will be Wednesday, May 23.
