Correctional officer stabbed at Ft. Madison Penitentiary

Oct 19, 2017

FT. MADISON — A correctional officer was stabbed five times Wednesday at the Iowa State Penitentiary (ISP) by an inmate wielding two 10-inch shanks, according to a press release from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

The officer was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics where he is being treated.

Danny Homan, AFSCME Council 61 president, said Wednesday’s assault comes on the heels of another assault against a correctional officer that took place Saturday. In that incident, the inmate was escorted by the correctional officer who was stabbed Wednesday morning.

“Both assaults were carried out by inmates associated with white supremacist gangs,” Homan said in the press release. “Inmate informants have been notifying staff for months that incidents like this were being planned, yet the ISP administration refused to act on the warnings.

“These incidents are a direct result of incompetent management, from the governor to the director of the Department of Corrections, the warden and ISP management not addressing issues that are brought to their attention and refusing to provide a safe environment for the staff or inmates within the facility,” Homan claimed.

Homan said his organization, AFSCME, has been sounding the alarm on the increased frequency of brutal assaults within the state’s correctional facilities, but alleged no change has taken place.
