Ten members of the Wednesday Study Club traveled to Salem for a History Day at the Lewelling Quaker Museum on Wednesday, Oct. 18. A Dutch treat lunch was enjoyed at the Underground Cafe in Salem.

The group then went to the museum for an enlightening and informative presentation by the museum volunteers about the Henderson Lewelling Family and their establishment of a nursery business (mostly apples), and providing a way station or a safe haven for runaway slaves. The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Following the museum tour, the group traveled to Mt. Pleasant for a drink and ice cream at the A & W, where they were joined by Helen Lease’s daughter, Chris Stauffer.

There was no business meeting conducted this month. The next meeting will be Nov. 15, at the Hill’s Bank in Washington at 2 p.m.

Hostesses for this event were Ruth Erwin and Pam Humphreys. The group thanked Ruth for organizing a very interesting and educational time on a beautiful fall day.

The Crawfordsville Lions Club met Monday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Crawfordsville Community Room with 12 members present. Lion president, Lance Miller, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Gene Miller offered prayer.

Lion Billie Jo Rose read the minutes of the Oct. 9, meeting in the absence of secretary Nancy Love. They were approved as read.

Lion Treasurer Randy Finke gave the treasurer’s report.

Billie Jo Rose said she had talked to an Amish home, and plans are being made to go there for the annual Christmas party on Dec. 8.

A Zone Meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. at El Oasis in Winfield. Jim Goff of Washington will give the program on Leader Dogs.

It was decided that the Christmas lights will be put up on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 9 a.m.

The annual Christmas Drawing will be Saturday, Dec. 16, at 1 p.m. The 4-H will have a bake sale beginning at noon and Santa will arrive at 12:30 p.m.

The United Church of Crawfordsville Hayrack Ride and Wiener Roast has been rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m.

The annual Methodist Ingathering will be held at Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 8 a.m. The youth will go to Adventure Park Paintball at Shellsburg from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5.

Aline Hesseltine welcomed a new great-granddaughter, Madeline Dianna Robnett, born on Friday, Oct. 20. At birth, Madeline weighed seven pounds, one ounce. She was born to Emily and Aaron Robnett, of Iowa City. She is the couple’s first child. Grandparents are Dianna and Rush Brentlinger, of Iowa City.
