The Crawfordsville Lions Club met Monday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at the Crawfordsville Community Room. Eleven members and four guests were present. Guests introduced were Stefanie Aerni, Jason Collier and Tina Collier. Donna Fletcher joined the group later to hear the program.

Lion First Vice-President Larry Fletcher took the gavel in the absence of Lion President Steve Williams. He also led the Pledge of Allegiance and gave the invocation.

After a delicious meal prepared and served by Alice Hochstetler, the meeting reconvened. Before delving into business, the club was treated to a program given by Foreign Exchange Student Stefanie Aerni, an International Student Exchange student who is a native of Switzerland and is a sophomore student studying at WACO High School this year.

She is residing with the Collier family. She arrived in the United States in January and will be going home the end of June. She introduced the club to life in Switzerland, as well as remarking on her experiences here.

The minutes of the April 22 meeting were read and approved. It was noted that Lion Arvid Anderson was honored as a 60-year Lion member as the recent district convention.

Lion Treasurer Randy Finke gave the treasurer’s report.

Old business: Members were reminded that the ball park clean-up would be at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 20. Some discussion was held with regard to the concession stand menu for the Car Show and who would procure the food. Lion Randy Finke will see to that. More information about the event will be available at the next meeting.

New business: The blood drive is June 3 at the United Church of Crawfordsville.

Since there were no tricks from the Tail Twister, the meeting adjourned.

The Wednesday Study Club met at the home of Wilma McAllister on Wednesday, May 15, with 11 members present.

The meeting was opened with the flag salute and the reading of the Club Collect.

Several members told about interesting books they have been currently reading and the lists of books read the past year were collected. Those lists will be used to determine who will furnish salads at the September meeting.

The program was presented by Marilyn Rees. She chose a topic related to the Civil War and told of the Littleton family who lived in the Toolsboro areas. The family lost five sons while fighting for the Union Army. Comments were made about the tragedies of the war.

Following the program, the hostess served refreshments and the members enjoyed visiting.

Memorial Day Services will be held Monday, May 27, at the Crawfordsville Cemetery. In case of rain, the service will be held at the American Legion Building. Verl Lekwa from Columbus Junction will be the speaker.

Flags will be put up Saturday, May 25, at 8 a.m. and taken down on Memorial Day on May 27.

The Crawfordsville Community Blood Drive sponsored by the Crawfordsville Lions Club will be held Monday, June 3, 2013 at the United Church of Crawfordsville Fellowship Hall.
