Jeff Johnston went on the Honor Tour for Veterans to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Johnston served in Vietnam in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1977. The group left The Eastern Iowa Airport at 6 a.m. and returned at 10:15 p.m.

Johnston said the veterans were fed very well and it was a very remarkable and memorable experience. They visited the World War II Memorial, the Woodrow Wilson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Korean and Vietnam Memorial and the Air Force Museum, but didn’t get to see the Marine Memorial, which was under construction. They also saw the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.

At the World War II Memorial, the veterans were met by Josie Wagler, formerly of Crawfordsville and Wayland, who noticed the bus with Iowa written on the front and came to greet them. Josie is a staff assistant for U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley.

Then they returned to The Eastern Iowa Airport, there were 400 people to welcome them home.

The Mission Committee at the United Church of Crawfordsville is sponsoring a “Mitten Tree.” It will be in the church sanctuary. The mittens will be presented to the WACO Elementary School to fill the needs during cold weather.

The church sanctuary has been decorated by the Worship Committee for fall and during the month of November, they ask that people bring canned goods, boxed dry food, toilet tissue, paper towels or other non-perishable items for the HACAP Food Drive. These items will go to the Washington County HACAP Center and will be used to help feed the hungry of Washington County.

Outdated products cannot be used, so please remember to check the dates on your items. Money may also be donated. The money is given out as credit cards to be used for non-perishable items. They are marked no tobacco or alcohol.
