Davenport man killed in mishap near Mt. Pleasant

An accident, occurring at 11:02 a.m. claimed the life of a Davenport man, 60-year-old Dennis Fleming. Fleming’s vehicle left the roadway, crossed the median, hit a guardrail and plunged down a steep embankment.

Henry County recorded its first traffic fatality of 2017 Tuesday on U.S. 218 near Mt. Pleasant.

Dennis Fleming, 60, Davenport, died in the flaming accident. Fleming was the only occupant of the vehicle.

According to the accident report by the Iowa State Patrol, Fleming was operating a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on U.S. Highway 218 near the 42 mile marker. The vehicle left the roadway to the left, struck the end of a guardrail and proceeded south into the median.

The vehicle then tumbled down a steep embankment onto railroad tracks landing on its top. Upon impact with the railroad tracks, the vehicle burst into flames. The driver was pulled from the burning vehicle by rescue workers and taken by helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospital.

The accident still is under investigation.

Traffic was backed up for over a mile while the accident was being investigated and cleaned up.

A large number of agencies assisted the State Patrol at the scene including air care, the Mt. Pleasant Police Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Henry County Health Center Ambulance and Mt. Pleasant Fire and Rescue departments.
