Debra Kay Mason Rice

Debra Kay Mason Rice 59, New London, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, as the result of a vehicle accident two miles east of Mt. Pleasant on Highway 34.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 4, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, rural Mt. Union. Visitation will begin after 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 3, at the chapel with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established for her grandchildren’s education.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1954, in Burlington, and was the daughter of Ray Charles and Viola Barkus Mason. She married Michael Rice and they later divorced. She attended Grimes and Apollo schools in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School. She had attended West Avenue Baptist Church in Burlington.

She worked as a CNA at SunnyBrook and volunteered with Great River Hospice House. She enjoyed camping, fishing and being outdoors. She also liked to travel.

She is survived by her children, Douglas Rice of New London and Amie (Zane Darnell) Rice of Danville; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Mason; and sister, Duawa Fahrner.
