University of Iowa women’s basketball recruit Ally Disterhoft and the Class 5A Iowa City West girls’ basketball team rolled over Mt. Pleasant, 74-40, in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.

“They’re very good,” Coach Joanna Settles said. “And there’s a reason that Ally Disterhoft is going to a Division I school.”

Disterhoft scored a game-high 33 points on the Panthers, aided by a press that Mt. Pleasant couldn’t break. She went 14-for-17 from the floor and made the only 3-pointer she attempted. She was four-for-five from the free throw line.

The Panthers kept the game close early, taking a lead when Taryne Shull scored the opening basket and Kelsi Phipp added an and-1 putback.

Iowa City West caught up, but the Panthers were down only 16-13 after the first eight minutes of play.

However, the Women of Troy started pressing in the second quarter, leading to five straight Mt. Pleasant turnovers and nine straight baskets for Iowa City West, which ended the night with 18 steals.

The Women of Troy stretched their lead to 35-13 with their second-quarter run — 12 of those points coming from Disterhoft — before Shull broke the streak by sinking a 3-pointer with 3:30 left before halftime.

Shull finished with 14 points on the night, including three shots from behind the arc, but on the night, the Panthers couldn’t generate enough offense to keep up with Iowa City West.

“We couldn’t handle their pressure,” Settles said.

The bright spot for the coach was the Panthers’ free throw shooting: they made nine of 11 from the line.

Overall, however, Settles wasn’t too disappointed with the loss, considering the competition.

“They’re a 5A team, and we’re 4A,” she said. “It’s like apples and oranges to me.”

Iowa City West was the last 5A team on the Panthers’ schedule — they opened the season against a pair of teams in the state’s biggest class: No. 7 Muscatine and Cedar Rapids Prairie.

But tough teams remain on the schedule for the Panthers, who host West Branch (13-4) on Thursday.

Mt. Pleasant is now 10-7 on the season and 5-2 in the Southeast Conference.

They will play between the JV girls and the varsity boys on Thursday. The JV girls tipoff at 4:30 p.m.

Taryne Shull 5 1-2 14, Kelsi Phipps 3 3-3 9, Leslie Taylor 0 2-2 2, Natalie Myers 1 1-2 3, Mary Wester 3 2-2 8, Hannah Becker 2 0-0 4.

3-point goals: Shull 3
