Four of the five Henry County teams will open league play this week as district and conference play begins in high school and NCAA Division III football.

Mt. Pleasant will begin its district play on the road. WACO will be at home for the second straight week. Winfield-Mt. Union will be celebrating homecoming and Iowa Wesleyan will host its first home game of the season. New London is on bye this week due to Danville’s schedule being cancelled in preseason.

Mt. Pleasant will hit the road to play Washington in a rivalry game between two 2-0 teams. The Panthers will be looking for revenge after a 42-17 home loss last season.

The Panthers had a tough time throwing the ball against Washington last season. Zach Beason completed just four passes for 31 yards in the loss, with two interceptions. Washington’s Ryan Reighard was a big problem for MPCHS in 2016. He went 11-15 for 232 yards through the air and ran for 88 yards and a score.

WACO will be at Midland High School in Wyoming. The Warriors fell 58-27 in last season’s game. Tim Ackles had 144 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the loss.

W-MU will also be looking for some payback against Cardinal. The Wolves lost a nail-biter last season, falling 19-18 on the road. The Wolves had two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground in the loss, but couldn’t convert on any extra points.

On Saturday, IW will host Crown College. The Tigers topped Crown 19-13 on the road last year on a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.

WACO and W-MU will begin their games tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. Mt. Pleasant’s game starts 30 minutes later, at 7:30 p.m. IW opens their home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 12 p.m.
