WAYLAND — And then there were two.

Of the three Henry County schools (WACO, Mt. Pleasant and Iowa Wesleyan) searching for a superintendent/president, WACO became the first to fill its superintendent’s position.

In a special meeting Tuesday night, the board voted unanimously to bring back Dr. Darrell Smith, a Swedesburg resident.

Smith, a retired superintendent, served as superintendent at WACO from 2002-2008. He retired after serving WACO but has been an interim superintendent at the West Bend-Mallard, Solon and Louisa-Muscatine School districts since retiring.

“We’re real excited,” said Tim Graber, WACO School Board president in making the announcement. “Dr. Smith lives in the district and knows the district. He is exactly what we were looking for.

“We have to focus on finances, and Dr. Smith is good at that,” Graber added.

Smith currently is president of the WACO School Foundation.

Two candidates were interviewed for the position, Graber said. The interviews were conducted Tuesday afternoon and the board met in special session following the interviews and selected Dr. Smith.

Smith has 42 years of experience in education. His contract will be for a minimum of 100 days beginning July 1, 2013. He will be paid $25,000 for his work.

He replaces Pat Coen, who was a shared administrator with the Winfield-Mt. Union School District the past three years.

Smith accepted the position Wednesday morning. Financial details have not been disclosed but will be at WACO’s regular board meeting Monday night. At that meeting, the board also will formally approve Smith’s contract.
