Duarte Furtado Medeiros

Duarte Furtado Medeiros, 70, Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at the Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Elliott Chapel, New London. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service with burial following the service at Burge Cemetery, rural New London. A memorial has been established.

He was born Oct. 19, 1942, in Ribeira Grande, San Miguel, Azores, Portugal, the son of Luis C. and Maria Furtado Medeiros. He came to America in 1954, at the age of 12. On Dec. 4, 1964, in Chino, Calif., he married Sherrill Ann Orndorff. He was educated in Portugal and California. He was a farmer, insurance agent and owned and operated many businesses. He owned a lawn care business, his own insurance and financial services agency and with his wife, owned and operated “The Haven” restaurant in New London. He enjoyed visiting with people, music and sports, especially basketball. He played basketball, racquetball and semi-pro soccer. He enjoyed attending and teaching adult Sunday School at the Bonaparte Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Dina (Paul) Saunders of Mt. Pleasant; one son, Matthew (Terri) Medeiros of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, David (Marcie) Medeiros of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jesse (Eduarda) Medeiros of Chino, Calif.; one sister, Mary (John) Costa of San Jose, Calif.; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eduarda Sousa; three brothers, Joseph, Louis and one brother in infancy.
