Eastern Iowa Honor Flight rescheduled

Sep 25, 2017

CEDAR RAPIDS (The Gazette) — An Eastern Iowa Honor Flight that was canceled last week because of heavy fog has been rescheduled for Oct. 3.

The flight will transport 89 veterans and chaperones to Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.

On this flight, the group also will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, George Rickey, an Honor Flight board member, and public relations/media coordinator, said Saturday in a news release.

Rickey said veterans will begin reporting to The Eastern Iowa Airport at 5 a.m. Oct. 3, with an estimated departure time of 6:30 a.m.

The flight is expected to return about 10:05 p.m.

Rickey invited the public to come to the airport to welcome the veterans home.

“Many of our veterans never received a ‘thank you, welcome home’ when they returned from their service. Here is your chance to make up for that,” he said.

Rickey noted that parking is free. When you come into the terminal, you can stop by and pick up a free parking pass.

One veteran on the flight served during World War II, 29 served during the Korean War and 59 served during the Vietnam War.

The flight is sponsored by Rockwell Collins.

The last Honor Flight of the year is set for Oct. 17, and it is fully booked, Rickey said last week.
