Emergency winter shelter approved in Iowa City

By Madison Arnold, The Gazette | Nov 14, 2017

IOWA CITY — Shelter House has found a new location for a low-barrier winter emergency shelter in a county building at 821 S. Clinton St.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement last week 4-0, with Mike Carberry absent, to allow use of the facility as a shelter from Dec. 1 through March 31.

The space opened up after a new building was completed for Johnson County Ambulance Service and the Medical Examiner. The new building allowed space being used for storage at the facility, at the corner of S. Clinton and E. Benton streets, to be moved.

As part of the agreement, the county will not seek compensation for use of the facility.

A low-barrier shelter provides a warm spot to sleep for those who are homeless this winter despite issues like substance abuse that otherwise could prevent them from staying at the main shelter.
