Everett William Hildebrand

Everett William Hildebrand, 92, New London, died Monday, July 22, 2013 at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 30, at the Faith Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Michael R. Scudder officiating. Burial will be in Lockridge Cemetery with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will begin after noon on Monday, July 29, at Elliott Chapel, New London, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established for the Faith Lutheran Church.

He was born Aug. 12, 1920, in Lockridge and was the son of Otto H. and Velda Belle Allender Hildebrand. On June 22, 1941, he married Doris Marsel Johnson. She preceded him in death.

He was a 1939 graduate of Lockridge High School and obtained his BS degree from Parsons College in 1947. He was a member of the Chi Beta Phi Scientific Fraternity.

He was a World War II veteran, serving from Sept. 3, 1942 to Oct. 18, 1945, with the 6th Air Force overseas. He received an American Theater Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Michael Houshin #4 Post in Burlington, the VFW Post 7641 in New London and a member of the Amvets in Mt. Pleasant. He belonged to the Moose Lodge #1003 in Mt. Pleasant where he held several offices over the years. He was a past member of the Eagles Lodge and American Legion.

After receiving his degree, he taught science in Libertyville, Birmingham and New London from 1947 to 1952. In the summer of 1952 he accepted the position of Lab Technician at IAAP in Middletown and retired 23 years later as senior scientist. He played the saxophone and banjo in several dance bands for many years and belonged to the Musicians Protective Union Local 646 in Burlington until 1986. He also played the piano and tuned pianos in southeast Iowa and Illinois. He was a member of the Southeast Iowa Antique Car Club. He belonged to the Faith Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in Mt. Pleasant. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, bird watching, coin collecting, genealogy and visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald (Mary Ann) Hildebrand of Iowa Falls and Gary Lee (Connie) Hildebrand of New London; one daughter, Juanita Savely of Mt. Pleasant; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Inez Hisel of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a brother, Willis Hildebrand.
