Federal prosecutors may indict Sanders-Galvez on hate crime charges

Jul 26, 2017

A jury was to have been selected Tuesday in Henry County District Court in the first-degree murder trial of Jorge Sanders-Galvez of St. Louis, Mo.

No jury was selected because a continuance has been granted in the case by District Court Judge Mary Ann Brown.

Sanders-Galvez is one of two people charged in the March 2016 murder of Kendarie Johnson of Burlington. Although the murder was committed in Burlington, the trial was moved to Henry County on a change of venue.

Federal prosecutors have also entered the case and are pondering whether to indict Sanders-Galvez on hate crime charges. A conviction of a hate crime carries a possible death penalty.

If Sanders-Galvez were indicted on hate crime charges, the case would be moved to federal court, most likely in Davenport.

Brown set a trial date of Tuesday, Oct. 24, for Sanders-Galvez but a trial is dependent on federal prosecutors not indicting him on hate crime charges.
