Fifth-ranked NL sweeps Hawks

NEW LONDON — The fifth-ranked New London volleyball team made quick work of Central Lee on Thursday night in a conference home game. The Tigers swept the Hawks 25-16, 25-10 and 25-17.

Breanna Mettler had a big game for the Tigers, leading the squad with 11 kills and adding eight digs and a 12-12 serving day. Ashley Birdsell had six kills. Kaylor Schulte finished with four kills. Addie Pry had three kills and Savannah Sutherland had one.

Carson McSorley led the defense with 22 digs. Sutherland had 18 digs, 18 assists and two blocks, and Kristen Rohdy finished with 14 digs. Birdsell led the team with three blocks.

The Tigers had a big day serving the ball. They went 70-72 on the serve with 10 aces. Sutherland had three of those aces, finishing 12-14. Camryn Blint had the most consistant outing, going 16-16 with one ace. McSorley was 14-14 with two aces. Birdsell was 9-9 with two aces, and Rohdy finished 7-7 with two aces.

The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union came out with its latest rankings on Thursday as well. Despite the SEISC tournament championship, New London stayed at No. 5.

The Tigers currently sit at 23-3 on the year. They will host their home tournament this Saturday, Sept. 30.
