Emergency crews are still working to put out a fire in the 400 block of East Cedar Lane in Mt. Pleasant this afternoon (Friday).

At approximately 12:45 dispatchers received reports of a “house exploding” at 408 East Cedar Lane.

Within minutes firefighters and police officers were on the scene.

A large plume of brown smoke loomed over the block, as particle debris floated through the air.

Maureen Edwards, a neighbor, said she heard a noise and saw a flash of light. “Sometimes you get flashes of light from the traffic, but this was different,” she said as she stood under a shade tree in a neighbors yard. “I opened up my front door and I saw smoke and then flames coming out of the north window of the house.”

Edwards said she tried to call 911, but couldn’t get through.

According to Edwards, one of the home’s occupants was sitting in the front yard yelling “help.”

“I was worried someone else might be in there,” she said. “The gentleman was very upset.”

The home is listed as belonging to Sheila Kerr-Hunter, although neighbors believed the home was a rental property. It is believed three individuals occupy the home.

“It went up real fast,” Edwards recounted.

According to a police officer on scene, it is not yet known what caused the fire. Crews are still working to put the fire out.
