The non-district football schedule for Mt. Pleasant will come to an end this Friday as Class 3A moves to district play in just over a week. Meanwhile, the county’s Class 8-Man teams continue to jostle for position in the standings, and Iowa Wesleyan hits the road for their conference opener.

This is the third week in a row where all five of the county’s teams are in action. Today, we’ll take a look at each of the five matchups.

MT. PLEASANT VS. OTTUMWA — Mt. Pleasant had their best game of the season last week, blasting Central Lee 50-0 in the homecoming game. This week, the Panthers will take on Ottumwa, of class 4A.

The Bulldogs and Panthers come in with the same record, 1-3. Ottumwa nipped Burlington 32-26 at the beginning of the season before being blown out by Marshalltown and Newton in the last two weeks.

Ottumwa is led by starting quarterback Eli McDanel. McDanel leads the Bulldogs with 299 passing yards and four touchdowns. He’s also the second-leading rusher, with 135 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Gage Cole has 160 yards and one touchdown so far this season. No Bulldog has more than one rushing touchdown this year.

NO. 2 NEW LONDON @ LONE TREE — New London just keeps rolling through their Class 8-Man schedule. They’re already up to No. 2 in the Associated Press poll, and are the top-ranked Class 8-Man team in the BC Moore computer rankings.

New London has played a relatively tough schedule but have thoroughly dominated every game. The Tigers (3-0, 2-0) are outscoring teams 164-28 this year. Running back Keontae Luckett (554 total yards, eight total touchdowns) and quarterback Isaac McSorley (535 total yards, 11 total touchdowns) have led the way.

The Tigers will travel to Lone Tree to play a Tiger team that was expected to compete for the district title in the preseason. The Lions have struggled out of the gate, though, and currently sit at 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Quarterback Harmon Miller has led the Lions offensively this year. Miller has thrown for 505 yards and seven touchdowns, while throwing just one interception. He has also rushed for 175 yards and four scores.

WACO VS. MONTEZUMA — The Warriors will be playing in Henry County for the third-straight week. After defeating English Valleys in the home opener, WACO suffered their second loss last week in New London.

WACO (2-2, 1-2) has owned the air in the majority of their games. Quarterback Nik Coble has thrown for 692 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. Running back Colton Horak is up to 627 total yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns.

The Warriors will host Montezuma (1-3, 1-2), which picked up their first win last Friday, beating Winfield-Mt. Union 34-20.

The Braves are led by quarterback Trey Shearer. He has thrown for 878 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions this year, and has also ran for 258 yards and three scores on the ground.

WINFIELD-MT. UNION @ NO. 6 IOWA VALLEY — Winfield-Mt. Union has their hands full this weekend as they travel to an undefeated Iowa Valley team that is coming off of back-to-back blowout victories.

Iowa Valley uses a fierce rushing attack to run through teams, led by Ben Smith, who has 447 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Wolves are 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the district. They are coming off a 34-20 loss to Montezuma. Jacob Ford had 128 yards and a touchdown to lead the Wolves last weekend.

IOWA WESLEYAN @ WESTMINSTER — Iowa Wesleyan will take on Westminster in their first conference game. Both teams had a rough day last Saturday, as the Tigers lost 38-6 at Eureka and the Blue Jays dropped their season opener at Millsaps, 35-0.

The Tigers will be looking for revenge after a 27-21 loss to the Blue Jays last season. Westminster has won the last three matchups between the two teams.
