DES MOINES — The Mt. Pleasant boys may be eliminated from the Class 3A state basketball tournament in Des Moines, but there are still plenty of eyes on Wells Fargo, as a few of the Panthers’ past opponents were in action Thursday.

The Class 3A field was wittled down to two after a couple of tight semifinal games. Glenwood upset two-time defending 3A champion Cedar Rapids Xavier 69-63 in the first game. Oskaloosa, the team Mt. Pleasant defeated in the 2017 substate game, took down Waverly-Shell Rock 48-45 in the second game.

Glenwood led 26-25 at halftime but had to come back from a 42-41 deficit after three periods. The Rams outscored Xavier 28-21 in the final quarter to knock off the favored Saints.

Glenwood’s Nate Mohr and Andrew Blum led the Rams to victory. Both Mohr and Blum scored 21 points, and Blum added 13 rebounds to his total. The Rams shot 17-18 from the line, led by Mohr’s 8-8 mark.

Xavier’s big two stars had a tough time shooting the ball. Matthew Mims was 4-20 from the field and 3-11 from three-point land, and Jackson Joens was 5-15 from the field and 3-8 from beyond the arc. The two did, however, co-lead the squad with 14 points. Mims’ seven assists also led the team.

W-SR used up all of its shooting luck in Tuesday’s quarterfinal game against Mt. Pleasant. The Go-Hawks came back from a 25-17 halftime deficit to take a 34-31 lead in the final minutes of the third quarter. Oskaloosa’s Henry Cole gave the Indians a 36-34 lead after the third quarter, and the Go-Hawks went ice cold in the fourth quarter.

Jared Kruse scored 16 points to lead Oskaloosa to victory. Cole and Xavier Foster each had 11 points, and Foster led the team with eight rebounds.

Luke Velky led W-SR with 13 points, and co-led the team with six rebounds. Jack Seward, who was red hot against Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, shot just 3-13 from the field and 2-8 from deep, en route to a nine-point performance.

Xavier and WS-R tipped off the third-place game this morning (Friday) at 10:30 a.m. Oskaloosa and Glenwood will be playing for the Class 3A title tonight at 6:30 p.m.
