HC Historic Preservation Commission hosting ‘Missing in Action’ in March

Feb 23, 2018

The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Henry County Court House.

Sales of the recent publication “History of Transportation, Henry County” are winding down with just a few copies left at the auditor’s office and local museums. Work continues toward providing information to the Henry County website developer for adding a page of small museums.

Spark Consulting and a volunteer team led by Larry D. Roth are finalizing the site inventory forms for the National Register of Historic Places for properties in Wayland and Jefferson Township. Seven sites have been identified for inclusion in a grant application to the Historical Resource Development Program for continuation of the project.

Posters and summary of the upcoming presentation “Missing in Action” were circulated to commission members. “Missing in Action” is a fascinating presentation by Mary Shier, tracing her father’s trek to safety after his B-17 was gunned down over France in World War II. Artifacts from the Kentucky Babe crash site will be on display with maps of Lt. Wm. Spinning’s escape to safety through the French Underground.

This free presentation is sponsored by the commission and will be March 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Henry County Emergency Management Center at 900 West Washington St. and open to the public.

Pat White informed the commission of upcoming events in Mt. Pleasant, including the grand reopening of the Harlan Lincoln-House on Iowa Wesleyan University’s campus Friday February 23 and a historic property tour in Mt. Pleasant on April 29.

The next commission meeting is March 21 at 1 p.m. at the Henry County Emergency Management Center. It is open to the public.
