Healthy Fat, Healthy Heart

Jul 05, 2017

July is in the “heart” of summer, making this month’s Fresh Conversations discussion focused on heart health.

For a healthy heart and a strong blood vessel system, health experts suggest eating less saturated fat (ex: butter and cream) trans fats (ex: microwave popcorn and chips) and tropical oils (ex: coconut oil). These fats increase the risk for cardiovascular disease by raising the amount of “bad” cholesterol in your blood.

Learn more about healthy fats and the ones nutrition experts recommend. Join July’s Fresh Conversations program to be held on July 19, at Mt. Pleasant Fellowship Cup at 203 North Jefferson St. at 11 a.m. The program will explore how to replace “naughty” fats with “necessary” fats such as nuts, avocados and fatty fish.

Trying new foods is a highlight of every Fresh Conversation’s program. Participants will sample recipes using avocado and learn tips on how to select the best avocados at the store. A demonstration of chair exercises will help individuals stay fit indoors during those hot summer days. Keeping the muscles strong and flexible promotes good physical and mental health as well as reducing the risk of falls.

New members are welcome and new sites are added periodically. Fresh Conversations is a free program offered by Milestones Area Agency on Aging at their nutrition centers and is designed to promote sharing and peer support. The monthly nutrition discussions, in-home exercise and food samplings can help seniors stay independent and healthy.
