Hurdlers break records at Panther Relays

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ shuttle broke the tape in 1:03.57 at Tuesday’s Panther Relays, setting a new school record, blasting the old meet record, and recording the fastest time in the state so far this season.

The team of Sidney Taylor, Leslie Taylor, Hannah Becker and Kelsi Phipps came in well under the previous meet record of 1:05.38, set by the Panther team of Leslie Taylor, Becker, Kaitlin Jones and Phipps set in 2012.

They were also under Urbandale’s then-state leading time of 1:04.09.

“It gives us a lot of confidence going into the Drake Relays this weekend,” Coach Dave Hutchcroft said. “We know we can run with Urbandale and Waukee, and I really hope we can make the finals and give these girls a chance to showcase their talents on the big stage.”

The Panthers had another meet record and five other event wins as they finished second at their home meet.

Kelsi Phipps, the Panthers’ shuttle hurdle anchor, set a record in the 100-meter hurdles later in the night.

Racing against three other Drake qualifiers — including teammate Leslie Taylor — Phipps claimed gold in a time of 15.12 seconds. She broke the record of 15.20, which was set by Leslie Taylor last season.

“Those two went 1-2 last night and will most likely battle it out for one and two at the state meet,” Hutchcroft said.

Another first-place finish for the Panthers came from the 4x800 team of Ellie Conrad, Natalie Ita, Hattie Liechty and Chloe Haffarnan with a time of 10:09.71.

Haffarnan then went on to win the open 800 as well, breaking the tape in 2:26.26 — seven seconds ahead of her closest competition.

Becker won the 400 hurdles handily in a time of 1:07.62, six seconds ahead of second place, and in the field events, Leslie Taylor took the long jump crown with a leap of 17-4 3/4, more than a foot farther than the runner up.

The Panthers probably could have scored a few more points in the field events, but Hutchcroft decided not to enter Drake qualifier Mary Wester in the shot put and discus.

“I elected to hold Mary Wester out,” Hutchcroft said. “She has to throw the shot tomorrow (Thursday) and the disc about 16 hours later. She is rated high in both, and we want to give her every opportunity to be at her best.”

W-MU got one of its top finishes in the throwing events from another Drake qualifier, Lou Krieger-Coen, who will throw discus at the prestigious meet this weekend.

Krieger-Coen hurled the disc 119-3 for first place in Class B.

It was the only event title claimed by the Henry County teams in Class B, but other top-six results for area schools can be found at right.
