Illinois man arrested for OWI in MP

An Illinois man was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, March 10.

According to police reports, Timothy Smith, of Diamond, Ill., was arrested and transported to the Henry County Jail where he was charged with operating while intoxicated, first offense a serious misdemeanor; eluding police, a Class D felony; interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor; restrictions on transportation of alcohol, a simple misdemeanor; reckless driving; speeding; failing to obey a stop sign and yield right of way; and failing to provide proof of financial liability.

At approximately 1:04 a.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office attempted to perform a traffic stop on a white 2005 Acura Utility SUV, in the 1100 block of E. Washington St., in Mt. Pleasant for speeding and failing to yield/stop at a stop sign. The driver of the vehicle failed to yield and pull over so a pursuit ensued through Mt. Pleasant. The vehicle was finally stopped in an alley near Casey’s in Mt. Pleasant.

After an investigation it was found that Smith was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or prescription drugs.

Assisting in the investigation were New London and Mt. Pleasant Police Department.
