Iowa basketball team adds C.J. Fredrick as second 2018 commit

IOWA CITY — The Iowa men’s basketball team added another commitment to its 2018 class on Saturday, a class of one before the day began.

Alexandria, Ky., product C.J. Fredrick (Covington Catholic HS) announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes on Saturday morning with a message on Twitter. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard had offers from Indiana, Penn State, Xavier and Butler, among others, but chose Iowa Saturday morning.

“I’m very excited to be following my dream to play for Coach McCaffery and his staff at the University of Iowa,” Fredrick wrote in a note posted on Twitter.

Fredrick joins Muscatine’s Joe Wieskamp as a member of the Class of 2018.

His commitment creates something of a dilemma for Iowa, as the scholarship situation already was up in the air with Connor McCaffery on the roster and Wieskamp representing the last available scholarship.

As it stands now, in addition to Wieskamp, the Hawkeyes would have Nicholas Baer, Brady Ellingson, Ahmad Wagner and Christian Williams as scholarship seniors; Jordan Bohannon, Tyler Cook, Maishe Dailey, Ryan Kriener, Isaiah Moss and Cordell Pemsl as scholarship juniors; and Luka Garza and Jack Nunge as scholarship sophomores for the 2018-19 season.

McCaffery is walking on this season as a redshirt. Fredrick’s addition means the Hawkeyes would need at least one player to leave for him to be on scholarship, and two to leave for both he and McCaffery to be on scholarship.
