Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team goes 1-1 in SLIAC games

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team travels to MacMurray College for a double dose of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic action Saturday. Iowa Wesleyan opened the day with a match against Greenville University and followed with a second match against MacMurray.

The Tigers dropped the first match 0-3 to the Panthers, but they were able to come bounce back for their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Highlanders.

IW got off to a slow start against the Panthers, falling behind 4-0 before scoring their first point on a service error. The Tigers tried to chip away at Greenville’s lead, getting within two points after a kill by Lida Landre and an attack error by the Panthers. Greenville went on a run and Iowa Wesleyan was unable to slow down their attack, dropping the first set 13-25.

After scoring the first point of the second set, the Tigers gave up three straight points to fall behind 4-1. Iowa Wesleyan was able to regain the lead with a kills by Sydney Ellsworth and Lida Landre. The Tigers were never able to get much separation, and the Panthers would eventually get the lead back. The set was tied at 16-16 when Greenville went on a run to close out the set 25-16, taking a 2-0 lead over the Tigers.

The third set started with a kill by the Panthers, but Iowa Wesleyan’s offense surged for five straight points to put the Tigers up 5-1. IW would hold the lead until Greenville tied it up at 8-8. Taylor Payne put down a kill to give Iowa Wesleyan the lead back, and IW would keep the lead until the Panthers tied it up again at 17-17. Greenville would go ahead on the next play, and the Tigers were unable to regain the lead. They dropped the final set by a score of 25-20.

The Tigers took on MacMurray College in the second set of the day. MacMurray scored the first three points of the opening set before Hunter Clark finally put the Tigers on the board. IW struggled to convert on their attacks, and MacMurray was able to extend its lead throughout the set. Iowa Wesleyan dropped the opening set by a score of 25-10.

The start of the second set began much like the first. Iowa Wesleyan fell behind 1-4 with two points coming off of their own errors. Jordan Miller started a run for the Tigers that saw the lead change in their favor. Cassandra Schwamborn converted on a kill to put IW up by 10, and the Tigers would go on to win 25-14.

The third set was a battle. IW took a 7-4 lead after an attack error by the Highlanders. The Tigers continued to maintain their lead, but MacMurray was never out of it. The Highlanders got within one point of the IW with a kill, bringing the score to 15-14. Iowa Wesleyan was able to put together a run to close out the set. The Tigers took the third set 25-20 to go up 2-1.

The Tigers cruised in the fourth set to take the 3-1 win.
