IW baseball team swept on the road

Mar 26, 2018

Iowa Wesleyan took on one of the top teams in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Sunday afternoon. The Tiger offense was held to one hit in the opening game, and IW fell 14-0. They looked to bounce back in the second game of the conference doubleheader, and after leading through the first three innings, Iowa Wesleyan was unable to maintain the lead, falling 7-3 to the Golden Eagles.

Iowa Wesleyan struggled to get the bats going in the first game against Spalding. The Tigers were hitless through the first six innings. Alex Payne was able to break up the no hitter in the top of the seventh inning with a single.

In the final game of the day, Iowa Wesleyan took an early lead over the Golden Eagles. Chazz Brown led things off with a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. Benjamin Steorts hit an RBI single, bringing Brown home for IW’s first run of the game.

After Spalding tied the game up in the bottom of the inning, the Tigers plated two runs to regain the lead in the top of the third. Joshua Sanchez hit a leadoff single and Chazz Brown followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Alex Payne hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in IW’s first run of the inning. Steorts picked up his second RBI of the game to give the Tigers a 3-1 advantage.

Iowa Wesleyan failed to score for the remainder of the game, while Spalding added runs in the third, fourth, sixth, and eighth inning to go back in front 7-3.

Chazz Brown led the Tiger offense after going 3-3 at the plate and scoring two runs in the game. Benjamin Steorts was 2-5 from the plate and finished with a team high of two RBIs.

The Tigers now have a 6-11 overall record. They will have their home opener on Tuesday, March 27 at 1 p.m. Iowa Wesleyan will host a SLIAC doubleheader against Principia College.
