IW volleyball drops two games

MONMOUTH — Iowa Wesleyan faced Monmouth College in the first match of the season, and faced Lincoln Christian University in its final match on Saturday.

IW fell 3-0 against both teams, falling to 0-2 on the season.

Jenna Murphy was named to the All-Tournament team for her play in both games.

In the opening set against the Fighting Scots, Iowa Wesleyan recorded nine kills, but committed eight attack errors. Monmouth put down 10 kills, and went on to win the set by a score of 20-25.

Monmouth had the advantage in the attack game in the second set as well. They finished with 12 kills compared to nine kills for the Tigers. The Fighting Scots won set two 25-19.

Iowa Wesleyan struggled to convert on attacks in the third and final set. They had just three kills, compared Monmouth’s 10 kills in the set. The final score of the third set was 25-16.

Lida Landre had team high six kills in the match, while Hannah Lien and Sydney Ellsworth each added four kills. Ariel Smale finished the match with 20 assists.

The Tigers took on Lincoln Christian University in their second match of the day. IW fell 23-25, 10-25, and 23-25 against the Red Lions.

Iowa Wesleyan could not find an answer against Lincoln Christian’s offensive attack in the opening set of the match. LCU put down 17 kills, while the Tigers finished with nine.

In the second set of the night, both teams combined for only 10 kills in the set. Iowa Wesleyan committed 11 attack errors in the set, which led to a 25-10 victory for the Red Lions.

The Tigers had 12 kills in the final set of the night, but it was not enough as Lincoln Christian converted for 16 kills. Once again, errors were the difference in the scoring. IW committed seven errors, while LCU had four.

Sydney Ellsworth finished the match with seven kills to lead the Tigers. Hannah Lien and Taylor Payne each recorded six kills in the loss.
