The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team snapped a 12-game losing streak on Wednesday night to pick up their second conference win of the season.

The Tigers, who previously defeated MacMurray on the road in four sets, topped the Highlanders in four again at Ruble Arena.

IW took the first two sets 26-24 and 25-15. After falling 25-22 in the third set, the Tigers came back to take game four, 25-18.

The first set was back-and-forth all game long and was even tied at 23-23 and 24-24. Lida Landre the Tigers’ last four kills of the game to help put the Tigers up 1-0.

After a dominant second set, IW began the third set on a 5-0 run, and led 10-4 before MacMurray scored six-in-a-row to tie the game up at 10-10. The Highlanders eventually led by four points at 18-14. IW scrapped back to tie it at 22-22 and 23-23 but a couple of bad spikes doomed the Tigers and MacMurray forced a fourth game.

The fourth set was tied 14-14 until the Tigers found their groove. IW closed the set out on an 11-4 run to win the game 3-1 and pick up their first home victory.

After the game, IW coach B.J. Wagy said switching the lineup helped the Tigers rebound in set four after losing a big lead in the third game.

“I think we just made a couple of substitutions,” Wagy said. “(We) just kind of changed the lineups a little bit, and sometimes that helps. Fresh arms and fresh faces on the court can help a lot.”

Landre led the way with 13 kills. Sydney Ellsworth had 11 kills. Taylor Payne finished with seven kills and Allegra Collette finished with six, including the final kill of the match.

Ariel Smale had 44 assists and 11 digs on the day. Jenna Murphy led the Tigers with 30 digs and Kara Gillis had 27.

The Tigers had six service aces on the day. Gillis had three aces to lead the team. Jenna Murhpy finished with two aces and Ellsworth had one.

IW moved to 2-16 with the win and 2-11 in SLIAC Play. The Tigers will host Simpson College in a non-conference contest tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m.
