IW women win first game, men storm back to force draw

It was a crazy weekend for the Iowa Wesleyan soccer teams. The Tiger women picked up their first win since 2013 on Saturday over Mt. Mary and the men scored four goals in a row to draw with Grinnell College on Sunday.

Grace Alongi had a hat trick in IW’s 3-2 win over Mt. Mercy on Saturday afternoon, with all three goals coming in the second half.

Alongi scored the first two goals of the game early in the half, which gave IW a 2-0 lead. Then, with the lead cut down to 2-1 midway through the half, Alongi completed the hat-trick to stretch the lead to 3-1.

Mt. Mary made it interesting with another goal of their own in the final 10 minutes, but goalkeeper Destiny Colon didn’t let anymore shots slip by her and the Tigers walked away with their first victory under new head coach Chris Early.

Things looked bleak for the IW men on Sunday when Grinnell College’s Antonio Dimarco scored his third goal of the game to put the Tigers in 4-0 hole midway through the first half.

The resilient men’s team cut the lead in half with goals by Fabian Sahcnez and Pablo Garcia before half. Jose Lorenzo scored to cut the Grinnell lead to 3-2 early on in the second and Sanchez scored once more to force overtime.

The two teams went scoreless through both overtime periods and the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

It was a bounce-back game for the Tiger men, who fell 6-1 at Hannibal-LaGrange University just three days prior.

Both Tiger soccer teams are in action at home this week. The women will host Faith Baptist Bible College today (Tuesday) at 4 p.m., and the men will take on Cornell College on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 4:30 p.m.
