James F. Stein, age 69, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place Wednesday, July 26, 2017 from 5-8:00 p.m. with a KC Rosary prayed at 7:45 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

James Fred "Jim" Stein was born December 5, 1947 in Portsmouth, Iowa, the son of Carl and Helen (Leinen) Stein.

He grew up and attended school in Portsmouth, graduating from Panama-Portsmouth High School in 1965. Jim continued his education at Iowa State University where he graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science.

On April 5, 1975, Jim was united in marriage to Darla Jackson McCune in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Together, they were blessed with two children, Melissa and James.

Jim worked for the United States Government as an Assistant District Director for FMHA for many years. In 1997, he retired as Loan Specialist for the Farm Service Agency. Following retirement, he became a full-time farmer.

Over the years, Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus, served as President of the Columbus Club, and was a 4-H Leader.

He enjoyed golfing, farming, playing cards, singing karaoke, bowling, and was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. Jim's favorite thing to do was hanging out with his friends and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Darla Stein of Storm Lake, Iowa; children: Melissa Stein of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, James Stein of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren: Mandy (Larry) Hegwer, Kevin Willeford, and Marcus Campbell; four great-grandchildren; brothers: Alfred (Jeanne) Stein of Lansing, Iowa; Pete (Patty) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa; Carl (Sandy) Stein of Odessa, Mo.; Bill (Laurie) Stein of Thurman, Iowa; Kenny (Julie) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa; Larry (Carol) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa; Paul (Denise) Stein of Amana, Iowa; sisters: Dorothy Gross of Glenwood, Iowa; Pat (Randy) Pash of Harlan, Iowa; Mary (John) Murtaugh of Harlan, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; brothers, Bob and Don Stein; and infant sister, Theresa.
