James Harlan Chapter of DAR donates items to VA hospital in Iowa City

Dec 19, 2017

James Harlan Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Parish Hall in Swedesburg. Twenty-one members were able to attend. Hostesses Judy Rawson, Dixie Klopfenstein and Vice-Regent Gayle Olson provided a wonderful assortment of refreshments.

Before the meeting, the Swedesburg Lutheran Youth Group presented a program about their June mission trip to Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona, where they visited the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, the U.S./Mexico border wall and other sights. The students learned about and volunteered their time on three troubling issues: homelessness, especially for veterans; human trafficking and immigration. Each student spoke of their experience. Now their goal is to share these experiences with area schools and communities.

Vice-Regent Gayle Olson conducted a brief meeting and thanked members who brought items for the VA Hospital in Iowa City. Dianna Klaus will deliver the items. Cathie Schreiner welcomed her mother Bonnie Thomas as a guest, sharing that her mother’s side of the family also has a patriot.

Other DAR members in attendance: Secretary Cathy Helman, Wilma Lewis Whitham, Waunita Gibbons, Jane Neil, Pat White, Carol Messer, Lena Schrader, Helen See, Registrar Carol Klopfenstein, Mary Savage, Janet Mills, Chaplain JoAnn Stout, Maria Whetsler, Becky Wright, Pat Brown, Sylvia Ridinger and Margaret Carlson.

The next meeting will be Feb. 24, 2018, at the Veterans’ Hall in Mt. Pleasant. The program will be Great Iowa Daughters’ Heirloom Project. Each member is to bring a treasured heirloom to describe.
