James Harlan Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, March 24, at the Mt. Pleasant Veterans’ Hall. Sixteen members and 10 guests braved the snowy, icy weather to attend. Hostesses Debbie Schmidt, Carol Messer and Helen See provided a wonderful assortment of refreshments.

Regent Barbara Welander conducted a brief meeting, after opening rituals. It was agreed to donate funds to the Iowa Wesleyan Retro Radiothon that took place over the weekend.

Registrar Carol Klopfenstein introduced Charles Larimer as the morning’s speaker. He talked about his book, “Love and Valor: Intimate Civil War Letters Between Capt. Jacob and Emeline Ritner.” Published in 2000, the book chronicles the lives of two prominent Henry County families and their friends during the Civil War.

Larimer remembers reading a portion of the letters as a child and being fascinated by them. Through the years, Larimer has encountered many amazing coincidences, which he called “ghost stories.” He shared many of those “ghost stories” — including finding additional letters, stumbling on unknown gravesites, discovering stories and meeting countless new relatives.

As a special surprise, Becky Wright presented Larimer with a quilt she had made, depicting the signatures of dozens of people who are featured in the book.

Other DAR members in attendance were Lena Schrader, Waunita Gibbons, Pat White, Secretary Cathy Helman, Janet Mills, Pat Brown, Mary Savage, Vice-Regent Gayle Olson, Cathie Schreiner and Margaret Carlson.

The next meeting will be Saturday, April 21, at Mt. Pleasant’s Veterans’ Hall. Morgan Hoenig will speak about “Bees and Other Pollinators.”
