Main Street construction may have just begun Monday, but the crew is already three days ahead of schedule.

Work on N. Jefferson St. is moving rapidly. Although Jones Contracting Corp. initially planned to only do construction from Washington St. to Monroe St. this week, they have already blocked off the east side parking between Monroe St. and Madison St. and started sidewalk removal there April 12.

Thursday, crews removed sidewalk from Monroe St. to the entrance of Team Staffing. From there, they will remove sidewalk north of Team Staffing to Madison St. on the east side, leaving temporary access ramps into the businesses.

Friday, April 13, crews will finish the sidewalk at the south end of Jefferson St. north of Drug Town. They plan to open the north-south sidewalk along businesses from Washington St. to Madison St. by early Monday, April 16.

Monday morning, traffic control crews will be installing snow fence along the east side of the new sidewalk in front of businesses from Washington St. to Monroe St. Monroe St. will be closed to through traffic from the west at Jefferson St. Jefferson St. from Washington St. to Monroe St. will be blocked off along the centerline.

At this time, traffic will not be allowed to travel south on Jefferson St. from Monroe St. or east on Monroe St. to Main St. This section will be one way only. “Do Not Enter” signs will be placed at Main St. on Monroe St. to stop traffic from traveling west on Monroe St.

City Public Works crews will be marking parking along the north side of Monroe St. from Jefferson to Main St. It will be angled facing east instead of west.

Kinney and Sons Excavating also will start removing the street from Washington St. north on Monday. Drish Construction will follow for a new eight-inch water main, and Mt. Pleasant Municipal Utilities will be laying the main and hooking up services after the main has been tested.

Jones Contracting will be removing bricks and pouring sidewalks on the east and west side of Jefferson St. from Monroe St. to Madison St.

On Wednesday, April 11, five residents walked through freshly poured concrete. The city asks that residents exit businesses straight to the street and walk in the outer portion of the street to the corner of Monroe St. or Madison St. Sidewalks are closed until barricades on each side are removed.
